The problem of finding healthy ways to diet for weight loss is an issue that has become more heated as the obesity epidemic has become more severe. You have a lot of different schools of thought who are all completely entrenched in their ways of thinking, and who may or may not have the scientific research to back up their claims. Of course, this has paved the way for hordes of vultures selling totally unsubstantiated weight loss diets to the confused public. It is not an enviable situation if you are someone who is struggling to maintain a healthy weight in a social environment that is increasingly hostile toward the obese.
There is really only one way to deal with this situation, as a consumer, and that is to basically become a scientist and develop your own understanding of how the body works and how a person can gain weight or lose weight. And you cannot focus all of your attention on the issue of rapid weight loss either, as this will only get you into trouble. You have to pay attention to what is a healthy weight loss diet and the answer may not always be what you think.

It all boils down to this: has a particular method of losing weight been tested in a number randomized clinical studies and what have the results been. However, the issue gets trickier because not all the published studies are of the same quality. I have often seen weight loss studies that claimed to be comparing very different diets, but the enforcement of the study protocols was so poor that all the participants between groups ended up eating substantially the same thing. See, this tells you nothing. Study design is such an important issue because you have to be making sure that the people in the study are eating what they're supposed to be eating, and it is not enough if they simply say that they have stayed on the diet program.

In the end, I think that if you intend to get serious about weight loss, it really means getting serious about health. Ultimately you don't want to just lose weight, because you can often pay the price in overall health and longevity. You end up with the type of beauty that will not last very long. There is no other way to establish a healthy body weight than to become healthier than you were when you had an unhealthy one. That is the one thing that I think everyone can agree on. So it is necessary to put in the time to really learn about healthiness, to study the science involved, to read what has been written by important diet doctors, and to test out your theories on yourself to see what type of weight loss diet makes you more healthy.
